   Hi Nancy,

   I just finished roman shades for my dad’s den. Your instructions were simple and easy. I did machine sew the top and bottom seams. He lives in the high desert of Ca. and the window gets full west sun (very hot).
   I used heave blind yardage and blackout lining. The problem: they will not fold up nicely as they are raised. I believe I should have pressed the pleates in before installing. Not a problem for me or my dad, but might be of concern for someone else. Just thought I would pass this along.
   My next project is drapes for my dad and mom’s bedroom. I will be using your directions for that, also. Thankyou for making it so easy.

   True, when using blackout lining the pleats become soft. Blackout lining fights being pleated. Something that may help… besides pressing… is to sew on some casing tape to hold ribs at each row of rings. This will defintely help force the shade to pleat better. I’m referring to a product called Roman Shade Rib Tape and you can find it at http://www.DraperySewingSupplies.com

   I see that on the Drapery Worksheet the cut lining length = finished drapery length +3″. Why is the lining longer than the fabric?

   Sorry I misread… I thought it said Cut drapery + 3, but is says finished drapery + 3.

   I’m confused on the calculator. If you put in 0 horizontal and vertical repeat does it then assume you will piece fabric together? My cut fabric width = 25.5″ and cut fab length - 65″. Fabric width = 58″. The yardage calc comes back with .793 yards of fabric, but that would not be long enough. Would be nice if the calculator told you that you will have to piece together w/that calculation or give you the option of buying enough fabric to not have to piece it together. Please advise - thanks!

   Yes, there is a bug with the calculator. So, for now let me help and answer your questions. You only need to enter the pattern repeat if you are going to piece your fabric. If the calculator tells you that you are going to need more than 1 width of fabric (and it does tell you this) then you will be piecing. Also, if the cut width is wider than your fabric, then you can assume you are going to piece… so enter in the pattern repeats. If your cut fabric width is less than the fabric width, you will not be piecing your fabric. Period.

   Now, I realize the calculator is telling you the wrong yardage… I will fix this… but for now, you need 65″ of fabric. 65 divided by 36″ is 1.8 yards.
