The finished dimensions of this fleece hat is 24″ around the head and 8″ high plus the fringe pom-pom.
Gather your supplies:
Sharp fabric sheers or a rotary cutter
Straight edge and measuring tape
A 28″ x 15″ rectangle of fleece. The 28″ is the width and the 15″ is the height of the hat.

Editor’s Note:
If you want to customize the size of the hat, measure around the head of the person who will wear it. Add 4″. Replace 28″ with this measurement. Measure from the middle of the forehead to the top of the head. Add 7″. Replace 15″ with this measurement.
Cut an additional strip that is 1″ wide and 24″ long.
Step 1: Fold the bottom edge up 3″

Step 2: Cut the fleece according to the diagram below… the cut slits should be 1/2″ long.

Step 3: Make cuts every 1/2″ from the top edge down 3″. This will create the top fringe pom-pom

Step 8: Tie the strips into a knot gathering the top of the hat. Wrap the long tie around to the front of the hat and tie another knot… pulling tight.
You can leave the longer strips as is… or you can trim them to blend in with the rest of the hat.
You’re all done! Wasn’t this fleece hat super simple? And it’s so cute to wear! Pair it up with a no sew fleece scarf and you’re ready for the outdoors!

Do you have a video showing how to do this? I love this method though because alot of websites claim to be no sew, but you end up needing needle and thread!

Great project! My daughter and I made it one morning before school as a test run for a girl scout project. Easy! We did cut it down a bit though by following instructions for customized-sized-hat since making it for 9 year olds. Also suggest rolling the lower band in thirds to tuck in cut edge, in case it’s not very straight. Looks and feels great! I’ve worn it all day to keep my head toasty. We made ours in red and will decorate by sewing red buttons on white snowflakes or hearts to attach them to the hat. Could keep no-sew idea and cut additional slits and tie strips of a second color on in various places. Great solid too! Picture doesn’t do the project justice (looks thin and flimsy — but that may depend on thickness of fleece). Highly reccomended.
