Learn how to sew a rod pocket, step-by-step with illustrations. Plus discover how this simple technique can be used in all of your sewing projects.

Learning how to sew a rod pocket can add a lot of versatility to your sewing projects.

A rod pocket is simply a pocket formed by folding fabric onto itself and securing the bottom edge. This forms a casing into where you can slide a rod.

At first, you may assume that learning how to sew a rod pocket is just for rod pocket curtains. But you can use this technique for lots of things. But before we get into these ideas, let me show you in detail how to sew a rod pocket. In fact, I'll show you 2 different methods!

Method 1

Step 1. Measure around the rod you plan on hanging your material on. Then add 1/2". This measurement will be represented as D.

Step 2. Fold down your fabric so that the folded edge is the top of your project.

Step 3. Measure down from the folded edge the 1/2 of D and mark across the fabric.

Step 4. Fold under the raw edge

Step 5. Sew a straight stitch along the markings in step 3... making sure to catch the fabric folded under step 4

Method 2
This method is idea for when you don't want to fold down the top edge to create a rod pocket. Or perhaps, you need a rod pocket in the middle of your project. And you don't want to fold the existing material. This method will give you a way to create a casing  anywhere on your project.

Step 1. Mark on your project where the top of the rod pocket should be. Mark all the way across your material.

Step 2. Measure around the rod you plan on inserting into the casing. Then add 1/2". This measurement will be represented as D.

Step 3. Cut a strip of lining or fabric the desired length of the casing plus 1" by 1/2 of D plus 1"

Step 4. Fold the side edges in 1/2" on each side and sew in place with a straight stitch.

Step5. Press the top edge down 1/2" and press. Press the bottom edge up 1/2"

Step 6. Align the top folded edge just above the markings made in step 1.

Step 7. Stitch across your material close to the top folded edge. The stitch across close to the bottom folded edge.

Now that you know how to sew a rod pocket, you may be wondering what can I use this technique for!

Here are few ideas you can use in your next sewing projects.

  1. Sew a rod pocket into the top of a sheet for some simple curtains
  2. Sew a rod pocket into the top of a wall hanging or tapestry
  3. Sew a rod pocket into the top of a needlepoint project
  4. Sew a rod pocket into the top of  a quilt to hang

I'm sure you can think of a few ideas too.

Happy sewing!
